Part 1 of my baseball showcase doubleheader weekend is in the books.
Erskine College is a great small school that plays Division 2 baseball. They have 1200 or so students total which is about half the size of the entire Townview High School complex.
Given its size I was surprised by how much talent they had on the field both competing and teaching. I think people undervalue smaller schools and their ability to be very focused on the individual student and making sure they succeed.
The campus itself is beautiful and very welcoming and the early fall weather was perfect for baseball.
I also am grateful for the coaches – including some current players – and their thoughts not only on baseball, but academics, and succeeding in life. They took the pitchers aside for a little work on High Intensity Interval Training and other exercise programs specific to keeping pitchers healthy.
I am also super grateful for Thomas – he is a local high school kid in South Carolina who caught me for my inning of pitching work. He did a great job presenting pitchers for our umpire crew.
There are few things for a pitcher better than a catcher who make hitters think the zone is bigger than it is and help me get ground ball outs.
I ended up working an inning of pitching as a left hander and then moved to short stop and later second base – playing righty of course.
Baseball Showcase Doubleheader Travel
From here I am headed from small town to big town: Los Angeles. Tomorrow is the Play to Win West showcase and a number of California schools. I had planned to travel to Chicago next weekend for a showcase, but that was cancelled due to COVID19, but I have now gone to both coasts and a few specific places hoping to make a positive impression.
